Das Kloster Ypsilou, ein aktives Männerkloster, ist dem hl. Johannes Theologos gewidmet und liegt im Westen von Lesbos, auf dem Gipfel des Ordymnos-Berges, in einer Höhe von 634 m und in einer Entfernung von 81 km von Mytilini. In der Tradition wird die Gründung des Klosters in byzantinischer Zeit vor 800 n.Chr. Als "Kloster von Korakas" bezeichnet, ein Name, der in den Jahren der türkischen Besetzung in "Kloster von Zisira" geändert wurde.

Aus seiner byzantinischen Phase sind nur sehr wenige Informationen gerettet worden, und es wird vermutet, dass das Kloster in spätbyzantinischen Jahren aufgegeben und verwüstet wurde. Das Kloster blüht in postbyzantinischen Jahren wieder auf, wird jedoch durch Feuer zerstört. Das bestehende Katholikon (Hauptkirche) wurde 1832 erbaut und bildet einen Teil eines Klosterkomplexes, der sich um das Katholikon herum entwickelt.

Im Kloster gibt es eine besonders interessante Sakristei sowie eine Bibliothek mit wichtigen Manuskripten.
